Joseph Hyams, M.ChS. who practices in the United Kingdom stumbled upon another use for Opsite. While treating a diabetic ulcer on a toe with Opsite, found that the dressing also relieved the pain in the foot caused by diabetic neuropathy. This patient had pain and tingling in all her toes which subsided immediately with the application of Opsite.
These results were then replicated several times by Mr. Hyams and other independent clinical trials. It was concluded that Opsite was a “new and effective treatment for painful diabetic neuropathy”.
Mr. Hyams did continue to trial Opsite with other painful conditions such as post-fracture pain. When Opsite was applied to these painful areas, he found they responded very well. The pain was decreased significantly.
How does it work?
A theory is that Opsite helps to produce a warm isotonic fluid which baths the nerve endings. If you consider the “Gate Control Theory”, a dry, open wound environment could continually product low grade stimulation to the nerve endings. The would be regarded as “ permanently ajar”. Mr. Hyams’ theory is tha Opsite has the ability to close the gate.
